The Technology That We Only Realize We Use when it Doesn’t Work Anymore

Modern technology quietly supports everyday tasks and digital experiences.

Technology has become so ingrained in humans’ day to day lives, that we no longer stop to think about the ways we engage with technology. You swipe your phone to communicate, visit a website to find information, an application to order some food, a digital banking service to pay a bill, an online program to do your work.

Any hiccup in that technology powered routine is quickly noticed and

Humans are discovering that effective technology is often about the technology’s practicality, and its ability to make digital human interaction simpler and more efficient.

The Invisible Nature of New Technology

One of the major trends of technological growth is that there is less obvious technology, compared to years past.

You used to be able to point out pieces of technology, like the computer you used, or the television you watched, etc. Now there is technology in just about every aspect of human life!

A person interacts with technology multiple times a day before heading to work. People get out of bed, if they own a smartphone with an alarm function it is already in use. Wearable technology such as fitness trackers, digital assistants, smart watches, etc. can be found in the routine. An electronic financial system might be utilized, or a navigator used to find their destination. At work, cloud software may be used to store and work with data. To keep in contact with colleagues, an online digital message center might be used.

Modern technology is so simplified in purpose, and for such common reasons, that it is sometimes unnoticeable.

Simplicity Can Be Precious to the Human Mind

People are becoming more enthralled with simpler technologies, as other complexities in their lives balance it out.

Humans no longer want to have to think too much, whether that entails their occupation, transportation, or relationships.

The purpose of a banking system application, as opposed to a banking system used at a store, is that simplicity is prioritized.

People just want to do the task the technology is designed for, without having to think about it.

For business software that’s meant to assist with running an enterprise, there is much more complexity involved – humans are likely going to want the full breadth of power offered to them for something that fulfills a much larger role. However, an online application designed to assist with communication across long distances (a digital messenger), can fulfill a similar need in an expected – simpler – manner.

Technology Is Meant to be Powerful and Work Well

The purpose of powerful new technology is often overlooked in favor of shiny new features.

While technology’s practical application can feel dull, reliability can trump flare – people are far more likely to continue using an every day application if its performance is consistent, versus one where features are plentiful; yet, it tends to crash at inconvenient times.

This is true for most aspects of human life. A business application that’s used for general book keeping and operations of the enterprise might not necessarily be the most interesting technology at the individual’s disposal, but it can be much more reliable than a less utilized competing application. This can have serious repercussions if not implemented correctly – business processes that are regularly utilized are much more critical than processes that are intermittently used.

This is why companies today are much more concerned about the reliability of the technology they employ.

The Importance of Automation

Technology has become so integrated into human life, that in some cases it’s almost autonomous in its function. Applications exist to organize a human’s emails and schedule into manageable chunks. Some even automate portions of these processes, or common data entry procedures for businesses. There are plenty of applications designed to do menial tasks, freeing up a person’s time.

This does have downsides when considering how helpful technology can be – if some routine processes for a business employee take upwards of thirty hours a week, and there is software that can safely automate some of that process, the human operator is in a much better position to focus their cognitive energy on parts of the job that require communication and relation skills. It is important to note that automation cannot be arbitrarily implemented. This is something that small businesses are realizing as they balance their budgets and expand their operations.

In some cases, automation can actually prove quite costly and cumbersome if the technology isn’t up to par. If implemented correctly automation can prove to be quite beneficial, the technology simply has to be relevant to a particular role that is already in place.

The Hidden Value of Security

There is one technological facet that people engage with on a daily basis, but rarely stop to think about its presence or importance: security.

When humans engage with anything online, they often do not think about all of the mechanisms that keep their information safe, and themselves anonymous – they simply trust that it works. The complexity of the processes for securing information is pretty astounding. Everything from passwords, to physical hardware devices, to software firewalls, etc. – all contribute to the protection of sensitive data.

People no longer have to worry about this, as much as they used to have to in years past, because these underlying technologies are trusted. This trust is not unfounded: there are many layers of technological defense put into place – from encrypted data storage and transmission, to advanced user authentication procedures. Humans can access their online banking from a cafe in the middle of a foreign country without having to fear for their safety.

Technology Is Becoming Expected by Businesses

Modern technology is also proving to be much more prevalent across the business world and modern enterprises.

There is a lot to consider regarding the business landscape. However, modern technology is allowing businesses to scale up, without relying on the same kinds of resources that enterprises in thepast did.

As long as there is an online banking system, there is a way to receive and send payment. If a business has an online customer database, then that enterprise can technically operate in multiple countries simultaneously. A company utilizing online business to consumer methods, can reach out to specific populations to advertise and sell a product or service – something not possible at scale years past. Technological tools for communication and operations, mean that businesses can operate at a higher capacity than ever before. The technologies that are the backbone of enterprises, have been revolutionized by new developments in the digital age.

Once again, technology’s overall effect on the success of a business is not certain – it is about the implementation of a certain technology.

The Likely Future of Technology Seems Simpler

Humans can expect the next wave of technology to be even more invisible to the consumer. Artificial intelligence, automation, interconnected devices, and cloud based technologies are set to become even more prevalent and ingrained as time goes on – making technology interactions even more seamless and efficient. Instead of accessing ten applications an hour on your smartphone, you might expect to access only two. Some things are likely to occur in the background, while others become much more streamlined in functionality and design.

This is all extremely exciting news for the future of human technology interaction – humans should be able to access a wider range of tools than ever before, with a much smaller learning curve. It will also raise some interesting questions about ethics and control of private information however.

A lot of the technology that has made human lives so convenient in the previous decade, will become even more complicated than humans can understand. Technology creators now will have to worry less about what consumers want, and more about what they actually need.

Technology Is So Powerful when It Lets Humans be Simple

Modern technology provides so many tools for the average person, that it’s difficult to imagine how anyone did things years past. However, most people no longer stop to think about what these technologies do, or what they represent – in their day.

These tools are great and powerful, and when used in the right situation can change human lives for the better.

The strength of technology now is that it provides these revolutionary experiences – but at their core, there is often so much complexity being handled elsewhere, that humans do not think about it. Technology creators hope that is always the case, as they are doing their job well.

People usually only realize the presence of technology, when they can not effectively utilize it anymore (the technology was either too complicated, or simply did not work properly anymore). This is indicative of what people really want out of technology – something simple and functional, that makes their lives better in a way that feels real.
